The 4% rule is a planning shortcut: if you withdraw about 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement and adjust for inflation after that, your savings have historically lasted 30 years or more. Flip it around and you get a target: the income you want, times 25.
It is a starting point, not a guarantee. Your real number moves with Social Security, taxes, healthcare, market conditions in your first retirement years, and how flexible your spending can be.
